ROSWELL, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - It’s peak flu season and the CDC says it’s been a bad one.
“It’s been a big, bad flu season,” said Dr. Luke Lathrop of SmartMED Drive-Thru Medical Care. “There’s been a lot of strep this year.”
Based on CDC maps and reporting, the southern U.S. has been hit especially hard, which is why a new drive-thru healthcare model is getting more popular.
“We’re not sitting in a waiting room,” said Amy Leachman, mother of three. “We’re not sitting in a room to wait.”
She’s a prime demographic for the burgeoning drive-thru healthcare model.
Dr. Lathrop is familiar with the Leachmans. He and his wife, Stacy Lathrop, own SmartMED, born out of the pandemic and a question of convenience.
“We come here regularly when there’s a sickness,” Leachman said. “Why are we going inside to see the doctor when the doctor can come outside to see us?”
It’s a philosophy that’s gained traction with patients looking to be seen quickly for illnesses and pains. What could be an hours-long wait at an urgent care is often minutes at a drive-thru clinic.

Making Life Easier: Healthcare Trends for Busy Families
ATLANTA, Ga. — “Anything that you would go to urgent care for other than a broken bone, we can address while you stay in your car,” explains Stacy Lathrop CEO of SmartMED in Roswell. Lathrop notes that the majority of patients are parents because of the convenience associated with Drive-Thru medicine. “When the whole house gets sick, you’re not sure what it is, and you don’t have the energy to get everyone dressed and to the pediatrician’s office, you can stay in the car, everyone can get swabbed or ears checked. And, you’re out of the drive-thru in 10 minutes,”

" The most important thing to us is delivering medical care with heart. Although we feel priveldged to have developed the first drive-thru urgent care in the country, we are most proud of our patients’ response to the care that they receive. Anyone can learn to provide medical care in the car, but what is truly special about us is our heart and dedication to the communities we serve. "
